The look

Gorpcore is outdoor clothing worn as everyday fashion: hiking jackets, fleeces, cargo trousers and trail shoes brought into a daily wardrobe. That might mean a technical jacket over work clothes or hiking boots with jeans. The outdoor pieces can appear one at a time or make up the whole outfit.[1]

The name nods to gorp, the trail mix carried by hikers.[1] Jason Chen named the look in May 2017.[2]

Try a shell jacket over a plain tee, loose trousers and a pair of trail shoes. Leave the jacket open so the layers show. Or wear a fleece with the jeans you already reach for. These are easy starting points because you can change one piece and see what it does to the whole outfit.

Look closely at the details: a high collar framing the face, a curved pocket seam, the contrast between a fine nylon surface and a thick fleece. Those small differences give a simple outfit something to look at.

Layers with a job

The familiar three-layer setup has a practical order. A base layer moves sweat away from the skin, a middle layer holds warmth, and an outer shell provides protection from the weather. A fleece can serve as that middle layer. Down insulation suits cold, dry conditions; synthetic insulation keeps working when damp. Choose the combination for the temperature and how much you will be moving.[3]

Materials change how an outfit feels, too. Synthetic base layers tend to dry quickly. Fleece lets air pass through but offers less weather protection on its own. A wind shell and a waterproof shell have different jobs, even when their silhouettes look similar. Leave enough room for layers to slide over each other without restricting your movement.[4]

For an everyday outfit, try the full combination on before leaving. Reach forward, sit down and put on your bag. Adjust any bunching at the shoulders or waist.

Shape, texture, a little colour

Start with the outline. A shorter jacket gives wide trousers more space; a longer shell can sit cleanly over a straighter leg. If everything feels bulky, change one proportion. Unzip the jacket, shorten the visible inner layer or choose a smaller bag. You can make a useful difference without replacing the whole outfit.

Black works especially well when the surfaces vary. Pair a matte trouser with a crinkled shell and a soft fleece collar. The fabric catches the light differently, so the pieces stay distinct. For colour, choose one place to draw the eye: red lenses, a cap or a backpack. Keep the rest quiet and see how much that single detail carries.

Start with what you own

Pull out the jacket you wear when it rains. Try it with two different pairs of trousers, then change the shoes. Take a photograph of each combination; proportions are often easier to judge that way than in a mirror. Keep the version you feel comfortable moving in.

At GORPED, we like dark layers, a clear silhouette and a sharp flash of colour around the eyes. A black shell, loose trousers and red lenses are a good place to start.
